Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge
There are more than 100 bridges in Sanjiang, among which the Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge is reputed to be the best. Built in 1916, it is a wooden-structured bridge built without nails. The bridge is a long corridor, on which two or more pavilion structures are built. It is supported by five abutments in the river and is paved with wood boards. There are five exquisite pavilions built on the body of the bridge, which represents the special architectural style of the Dong ethnic group. The bridge is 75 meters long, 10 meters high and more than three meters wide. Though almost 100 years old, the bridge has been very well preserved by the Dong people. You can feel the shadow of history when you walk on the bridge.
Dudong is a remote Dong village nestled in the mountainous area on the border of Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi, 48km from Sanjiang city. Here one can see shelter bridges, stockade villages and rice terraces. Dudong was a centre for guerilla action against the Japanese during the 1940s. Its newly built drum tower is the highest in the region.
Gaoding
An amazing two hour uphill trek from Dudong will bring you to Gaoding, the most primitive and intact Dong village in the Sanjiang area. Here amid the green rolling landscape one sees wooden houses scattered about the valley. Six drum towers intermingle with the houses.
The Drum-Tower located at Mapang village, in the north of Sanjiang County, is a masterpiece of Dong ethnic architecture. The tower with nine levels is more than 20 meters high. There are four indoor pillars and a main hall with a beautiful Dong country landscape painted on the inside of the tower. Other paintings can be seen in the tower, bright colored dragons and phoenix, flowers, legendary figures, and geometric patterns. The tower is a multi-eave wooden structure, in a square, hexagonal shape. Originally it was built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and rebuilt in 1943. The Mapang Drum-Tower is the largest and most typical drum-tower in the Dong minority region of Guangxi province.
