Baling Hill is located in the northwest part of Jiangling County, about 8 kilometers away from the town.
It was also called Dragon Hill in ancient times because there are many ancient tombs on the hill, especially from the State of Chu during the Spring and Autumn, the Warring States Period and the Han Dynasty.
It is said that there are more than 800 large ancient tombs in Jingzhou City, among which there are 18 tombs of Chu Kings.
Jingzhou has served as the capital during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420) and Five Dynasty Period (907-960) and also the capital of local jurisdiction in the following time.
Now, the remains of the Chu capital stand about 5 km from the city proper, holding abundant of historic relics in numerous cultural sites from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.
The outline of the old city of Jingzhou had changed little since the Three Kingdoms period and is among the first group of 24 historic and cultural cities designated by the State Council.
Jingzhou Museum is located in the Kaiyuan Temple, in the west part of the city, with more than 120,000 historical relics, of which more than 200 are the state-first-grade relics and objects, including the Sword of Goujian, King of Yue, a more than 2,000-year-old male corpse of Western Han Dynasty in a good state of preservation, etc.
The museum was established in 1958, covering an area of 46,600 square meters.
There is a rich collection of arts and antiques in the museum, among which the most famous are the relics in Old Stone Age and New Stone Age, the antiques in East Zhou dynasty and those of Qin and Han dynasty.
