As the capital city of Shanxi Province, Taiyuan is an important transportation hub in northern China. It is conveniently accessible from many other cities in China.
By Air
Taiyuan Wusu Airport, 18km from the downtown and located in a southern suburb, is one of the major airports in China. The airport has about 50 direct flights to major cities in China such as Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai , Chengdu, Guilin, Nanjing, Chongqing, Shenyang, and Xian, in addition to international flights to Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Singapore. The airport has a shuttle from downtown to the airport, but the vehicles are small and do not have regular service. Most people prefer to take a taxi to the airport, which takes about 30 minutes and costs no more than 50 RMB.
By Rail
Taiyuan Train Station is situated on North Jianshe Road, facing Yingze Street. It is the terminal of Jing-Yuan Railway and Shi-Tai Railway and the starting point of Tai-Jiao Railway and connects about dozen medium and large cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian. Every day about 20 trains arrive and depart from the station. It is very convenient for travelers to transfer from every corner of downtown by either taxi or bus (look for bus No.1, No.5, No.6, No.10, No.21, No.102, or No. 601). For your convenience, the ticketing office can book tickets by phone for a service fee of 5 RMB.
By Road
Taiyuan is linked to many cities in China by road. The Tai-Jiu highway is Shanxi's primary highway. It links Taiyuan to Shijianzhuang and Beijing via Yuci County, Shouyang County, Yangquan City and Pingding County. Yuan-Tai highway can take you to Wutai Mountain, Xuankong Temple and Ying County Wooden Pagoda. Also, Taiyuan has highways to places such as Gujiao and Wenshui.
By Public Bus
Taiyuan City enjoys convenient and efficient public bus routes around the city and major tourist sites. The traffic in Taiyuan is seldom congested due to the city's wide roads and good traffic regulations. Travelers can take buses to every sight within the city for only 1 or 2 RMB. Please note that the last daily bus stops running at 7:30P.M.
By Taxi
At present there about 8,300 taxies on the roads in Taiyuan City, which is very convenient for citizens and travelers. Taxis usually charge 7 RMB for the first three kilometers and 1 RMB/km after.
