Itinerary
Pick up from Shanghai Wusongkou or Baoshan Port according to the cruise arrival time, transfer to downtown area for a Jewish Tour of Shanghai. For over one hundred years, from 1850 to 1950, Jews made an important cultural impact on the economic and development of Shanghai. Many found safe haven here escaping Nazi persecution. The trip starts with a walk tour through the Bund lined with exotic building clusters, e.g. Peace Hotel built by Sir Victor Sassoon. From there, head to the Hong Kou district known as the Shanghai ghetto to explore the area. In February 1943, the Japanese forced nearly 20,000 Jewish refugees to live in small area in the over- crowded Hong Kou district. The place became a ghetto where both Jews and Chinese shared years of hardship. Today this poor neighborhood of Shanghai holds much of its 1940’s character. Then be transferred by car for a visit to Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Museum, former Ohel Moishe Synagogue, built by the Sassoon family in 1920; Noah’s Ark to the minds of Jewish refugees as well as the main place to conduct Jewish religious activities during World War II.
