Itinerary

Pick up from Shanghai Wusongkou or Baoshan Port according to the cruise arrival time, transfer to downtown area for a Jewish Tour of Shanghai. For over one hundred years, from 1850 to 1950, Jews made an important cultural impact on the economic and development of Shanghai. Many found safe haven here escaping Nazi persecution. Your guide will explain the history of the area.

The trip starts with a walk tour through the Bund lined with exotic building clusters, e.g. Peace Hotel built by Sir Victor Sassoon. From there, head to the Hong Kou district known as the Shanghai ghetto to explore the area. In February 1943, the Japanese forced nearly 20,000 Jewish refugees to live in small area in the over- crowded Hong Kou district. The place became a ghetto where both Jews and Chinese shared years of hardship. Today this poor neighborhood of Shanghai holds much of its 1940’s character. Then be transferred by car for a visit to Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Museum, former Ohel Moishe Synagogue, built by the Sassoon family in 1920; Noah’s Ark to the minds of Jewish refugees as well as the main place to conduct Jewish religious activities during World War II. In January 13, 2004, the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue was acknowledged as an excellent historical building and the People's Government of Shanghai's Hongkou district declared it to be a protected cultural relic site. Now it is a museum exhibiting abundant photos, living stuffs and documents of all time. Then, walk (about 5mins) to the Huo Shan Park to see a Jewish monument dedicated to the Jewish refugees and then a Chinese (formerly Jewish refugee) home. Continue strolling around the neighboring area. Followed by the Old French Concession, an area once leased to the French in the Luwan and Xuhui districts of the city, is a reminder of an older Shanghai. The visitor-friendly area is packed full of beautiful colonial mansions and hotels dating back to the first three decades of the twentieth century. Transfer back to Shanghai Wusongkou or Baoshan Port 2hrs before your cruise departure time.
