Zhenjiang, translate as "Garrison of the River," is a city with a history of 2,500 years. Sitting on the southern bank of Yangtze River, the city borders Jiangsu Province's capital Nanjing, and Changzhou and Yangzhou. As a transportation hub, Zhenjiang is one of the busiest ports in the nation and is connected to Shanghai and Nanjing by the Beijing -Shanghai rail route and the Yangtze River freight and passenger transport routes. The city has a population of 2.67 million and covers an area of 3,847 square kilometers. One of the most intriguing legends in Chinese folklore, the "Tale of the White Snake," depicts a fantastic love story of a magical, 1,000-year-old snake spirit that reunites with her human lover. Another story involves the first emperor of the Qin dynasty, Qin Shi Huang, who believed that Zhenjiang's location contained too strong a spiritual force, as determined by Fengshui, a Chinese belief system. So the emperor ordered 3,000 prisoners to dig a tunnel through a hill to divert the power from the city.
