Mt Qomolangma (Mt. Everest)

The Tibetan name for Mt. Everest is "Mt. Quomolangma" which literally means "The Third Goddess." The mountain forms a border with Nepal in Tingri County and is 8,848.13 meters high, the tallest mountain in the world. Within an area of 5,000 square kilometers around the mountain, there are four peaks that are more than 8,000 meters high and 38 peaks that are more than 7,000 meters high. On the northern slope of the peak there are 217 glaciers with Rongpu Glacier being the largest. Forty kilometers from the foot of Mt. Qomolangma stands the Rongpu Monastery. The monastery has become a camp for mountaineers.

Mt. Qomolangma can be reached by taking a bus from Lhasa through Gyangze, Shigatze, Lhzse and New Tibetri. The charge for each bus is 400 yuan and 65 yuan per person.
