Taian is located at the foot of Mount Tai with the Yellow River to the west. It has a total area of 7,762 square kilometers. Taian enjoys a temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The city receives an average annual rainfall of 700-800 millimeters and the average annual temperature is 12.9 C
People
Taian has a population of 5.46 million, 98.71 percent are of the Han nationality, while 1.02 per cent is of the Hui ethnic groups. The main religion here is Buddhism and Taoism.
History
As early as 5000 years ago, people lived and worked in the area. In the Zhou Dynast (1066-221BC), Taian was under the administration of the Qi and Lu kingdoms. In 200 BC, Qi County was set up here. In the 6th century AD, the name was changed to Dongping County. In 1182, Taian was established as a prefecture. The founding emperor of the Qin Dynasty performed sacrificial rites at Mount Tai in the 3rd century BC, after which Mount Tai was frequently visited by succeeding emperors. Taian served as the gateway and stopover to the Mount Tai.
