On the outskirts of Sanya city, 20 kilometers west of 'the end of the world' lies Nanshan Mountain, guarded by a grandiose statue of Buddasava of Mercy rising 108 meters above the sea. The mountain is believed to be an auspicious mountain of longevity in Chinese mythology.
Nanshan Temple is the only Buddhist temple built after the birth of the People's Republic of China. The architecture of the entire temple complex was patterned after a pre-Tang Dynasty style, and is surrounded by tropical botanical gardens. Its short history does not discourage pious Buddhists and dutiful son and daughters from coming to pay homage.
