Qufu is the home of Confucius, the celebrated thinker and educator of ancient China. The Confucian temple, mansion and graveyard are on the UNESCO'S list of world cultural heritage sites.
Geographic Features
Qufu is located 160 km. south of Jinan. It covers an area of 899 square meters. On the east lies the Yimeng Mountain, Huai River to the south and Mt. Tai on the north. Qufu enjoys a temperate continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. The city receives an average annual rainfall of 666 millimeters and the average annual temperature of 13.6 Co.
People
Qufu has a population of 620,000. The natives mainly are Han nationality. The main religions are Taoism and Buddhism.
History
During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, Qufu was the capital of the state of Lu. It is the birth place of Confucius. From the western Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, 12 emperors came to Qufu to pay homage to Confucius. Qufu was prosperous during the Qing Dynasty. During the Cultural Revolution, Qufu suffered serious damage. Since the 1980s Qufu has been rebuilt and now attracts many foreign and domestic travelers.
