Location

Leshan Giant Buddha, Leshan Travel GuideLeshan, known as Jiazhou in ancient times, is a city with a history of more than 3,000 years. Leshan means “Pleased with the place.” It is located about 175 km southwest of Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province. The Minjiang, Qingyi and Dadu Rivers flow through the area. As the second largest city in Sichuan Province, Leshan covers a total area of 825 square km with a population of 533,000.

Geography & Climate

The climate is warm and mild and varies significantly with the altitude from an annual mean temperature of 3°C in the cold-alpine zone to 17.2°C in the subtropical zone. The city is foggy most of days in a year, with relatively high humidity and rainfall.

Tourism Resources

Leshan is a national historical and cultural city, and also an excellent scenic-tourist city. The city is endowed with abundant world-famous tourist attractions, such as Mt. Emei, one of the four famous mountains of Buddhism with dozens of temples; Leshan Grand Buddha, the world's largest Buddha; the ancient city of Jiazhou and Guo Moruo, two famous poets and historians. In December 1996, both the Great Image of Buddha and Emei Mountain were registered as world heritages by UNESCO.
